CMV: school uniforms are a terrible idea

School uniforms should be abolished.

Schools should still have a strict dress code but it should be the same for everyone. A collared shirt or polo, preferably long sleeved (due to reasons I’ll list later), trousers or skirt and closed toed shoes, with a light jacket or blazer (depending on weather) are my suggestions.

School uniforms are terrible for the following reasons:

:

Grey jumpers are impossible to clean and the dyes run.

The blue collars on collared shirts are a breeding ground for bacteria- a 100% cotton polo is much better.

Most school blazers are terrible quality for the weather outside- polyester blazer for an Irish winter? Hell no. A good wool coat or at least a waterproof one is so much better for the cold and wind.

Grey trousers are impossible to clean- green grass stains are impossible to remove from them so you end up with black trousers with green stains by the end of the year.

Rucksacks ruin your back- they cause so much strain in your back and make your shoulders ache.

Shoes are also poor quality because the sole is made out of that terrible plastic stuff that breaks after a few months.

And, of course, the biggest disadvantage of school uniforms are that they are expensive. Some private schools in Ireland have blazers priced at over €100 just because they have the school’s crest on it. Most people will tell you to get a second hand one but they don’t last and it defeats the purpose of spending money on uniforms in the first place.

This is why I think that while every student should wear the same outfit every day, school uniforms are an outdated and expensive thing that just don’t work in today’s society- a 100% cotton shirt will last longer and the quality will be better than a polyester one.

Edit to add: I’m in secondary school. I have worn uniforms for five years, the last two being at a fee paying school. I would recommend taking a look at the comments posted by u/RemedialReindeer, u/PrankMeMaybe and u/princesswnz for very good points against my argument.

Edit to add: I’ve been overwhelmed by the support I’ve received and I’d like to thank all those who replied to the post for their kind comments. Thanks to all for participating!
