Every year, I buy my girlfriend the most expensive thing I can think of to show her that I love her. She doesn’t care about material possessions, and hates expensive gifts, but she sees how much joy I get from buying her things and allows me to do it. She’s always been selfless and I want to make her feel good. I make more than her, I can afford it. It’s not like I’m ruining myself financially. I can afford to get myself a new phone every few months and I can afford to buy her a nice gift.

She told me that this last Christmas she received the most expensive gift she had ever gotten so far: a 4-karat gold Rolex. During the spring, she took it to get it cleaned and the spa owner (we’ll call her Lila) noticed the Rolex on her wrist. The spa owner asked if she could see it and she handed it over, then Lila showed her something else on her arm. My girlfriend was surprised, so she asked Lila if her necklace was a Rolex. It was- then Lila revealed that the Rolex she was wearing was fake, and that she had made it herself. My girlfriend was impressed and asked if she was selling them, but Lila didn’t think they were good enough.

My girlfriend convinced Lila to make another Rolex to sell to her. Lila agreed and in a few days she made another fake rolex. My girlfriend wore it everywhere, even more than she had worn the real one. She even took it to the beach in Hawaii and into the ocean.

I went and talked to Lila myself, and I asked if she would be willing to make more. She mentioned that she had a story behind the Rolex she made, a story that she wanted to use to make the fake Rolexes. Lila said that she was from a wealthy family in Europe that owned a large plot of land and a large manor on it. She was the youngest sibling, and her 5 older siblings all had talents. She couldn’t draw or paint or sing, she couldn’t play sports, and she couldn’t do anything special. She asked her parents if she could start a jewelry business, but they weren’t interested.

The only person that was interested was her brother William, who left her his Rolex in his will after he died in a swimming accident. She used the Rolex as the first piece of jewelry she ever made. A Rolex, she told me, a watch worth $60,000, was made of solid gold and almost perfect. But she never saw the Rolex as a piece of jewelry, and she never saw it as something beautiful. For her, the Rolex was a symbol that she was nothing. Her youngest brother, who was also nothing to her parents, was the only person that thought she had talents or value. But now that he was gone, she would never get the chance to prove her skills to her parents. She used the Rolex to make fake fake-Rolex’s. Now, she didn’t see it as a symbol that she was nothing. Now, she saw it as a symbol of the fact that she didn’t need her talents recognized by anyone. She was happy on her own terms.

But the real question is - how did she die?
