AITA for pretending to be an employee so I wouldn't have to deal with a customer who smelled bad?

I'm 19 and I work at a gas station. I've worked there for a little under a year and I have about 4 months left on my contract. I'm taking a class at a uni this summer and I actually received an internship in the field I'm studying for the fall so I'll be quitting my job there after the summer anyway.

It's a small gas station and the work is pretty chill. It's mostly cashing transactions and cleaning, fairly simple stuff.

One evening last week I was on shift with my coworker, let's call him Andy, and he was working on cleaning the parking area we have behind the store. That meant I was working alone at the desk.

It was a pretty slow evening as expected, which was why it was lucky that Andy was allowed to do some cleaning.

So around 9:30 a guy walks into the store and this was pretty much the only time that evening a customer came in.

This guy was in his 20s and fairly skinny. He was pretty tall, roughly 6ft5 (190cm) and had very long hair and pretty bad teeth. He didn't smell great and the first thing I noticed about him was his stench.

It was pretty obvious even when he was on the other side of the store. It smelled like sweat and maybe poop? I'm not really sure. It was just really bad and I remember thinking to myself whether I was gonna have to deal with him and how to do it best.

This guy had a cart and started walking around the store, picking up all sorts of random stuff. You know, the usual. Candy, soda, chips etc. stuff like that.

It took him maybe like 15-20 minutes to fill up his cart and he finally came to the counter. I started to scan the items for him after I asked how his day had been, which he responded to by just grunting. Alright then.

Bad smell aside, I really wish he had just paid with card, but he chose to pay with cash. This meant I needed to hand him change back, which I was not looking forward to, given his smell.

But it had to be done, so I was scooping the cash out, preparing his change when I heard the door to the backroom open.

I immediately knew that Andy had finished his cleaning. It couldn't have been better timing, I swear.

So I'm scooping out his cash and I hear the sound of the door opening behind me followed by Andy walking towards me.

I don't know why but I just sort of panicked in the moment. I don't think I've panicked like this in a long time.

The moment Andy walked up I said "Thank you and have a great evening" and gave the dirty guy his change.

I then threw the rest of the items in a bag and started to walk away from the register while saying "Andy, can you take over? I need to clean the bathrooms."

I didn't even check whether or not the dirty guy had his change or if he had any issues with his items. I just left the desk as fast as possible.

Andy was pretty confused but he didn't say anything to me. I didn't hear the dirty guy say anything either.

I went into the backroom and sat down in the chair.

I sat and thought for a moment before realizing what I had just done and started laughing at how ridiculous it was.

But since I had told Andy that I was going to clean the bathrooms I still had to do that. What if he checked and saw that the bathrooms were still dirty? Not a big deal but if he had he would've known I lied.

I then went and cleaned the bathrooms and when I was done I came out and the dirty guy was gone and Andy was cleaning the floor.

He turned around and said "dude you dipped out pretty fast haha." before chuckling. In that moment I was sure that he had figured it out.

I then played along and said "yeah I didn't want to deal with him. He smelled pretty bad." Andy immediately started laughing.

I then asked "Did you figure it out?" and he was like " Yeah, I'm not stupid lol."

We then both started laughing and I asked him whether or not he felt bad that I literally dipped out on customer care for him to deal with.

He said it was no big deal and I offered to buy him food and he said we're good. We had a good laugh about it and that was it.

The next day I went to work and my manager asked me to come and talk to him in the backroom.

I went in and sat and he was like "I heard about what you did yesterday with the guy who smelled bad." and I was like "I'm sorry"

He immediately interrupted and said " No, this is good. I've been trying to teach Andy to recognize when customers are treating employees badly and this is a great example of how you recognized that and made sure you dealt with it correctly."

He commended me for doing what I did.

Andy also told me that our manager was pretty impressed with it as well, so I'm a little confused whether I should be an asshole for dipping on the dirty guy or not.

So this is my question:

AITA for dipping out on the dirty guy for Andy to deal with instead?
