Is it worth switching from engineer to product manager, with the plan to go into venture capital after that?

I'm an engineer at the moment, with about five years of work experience. I've been in a couple of pretty large companies, so I think I would be able to get into most product management positions in the same types of companies.

My goal is to go into venture capital. After that, maybe run my own startup or something, but one step at a time. I don't think I have much experience to transition into venture capital right now, and I feel like being a PM for two or three years would be a more natural path than trying to go straight into it.

So, is this a good plan? Is this a good career path?
