How do people afford their lives?

I'm a software engineer who slacks off on the job and gets paid 80K/yr plus benefits. I live in an expensive city and the money is not really enough to live in it. I see tons of people doing manual labor in my city and they all must be paid significantly less than me. So how do they afford their lives, housing, transportation, medical bills, etc. People can't just magic up money or steal it. Everyone has a budget and countless people survive on a lot less than I do. How? I really feel like I'm going insane the more I make and the more I see how others survive on way less.
