First a bit of background. I'm a novice anime watcher but I do tend to enjoy them.

I've watched anime as far back as '95, in the physical VHS days.
Obviously couldn't watch many anime at that time since there weren't many on sale in my country. The anime selection in my country started to get better in like '03. However, I didn't quite like many of the anime I've watched. I wouldn't say I liked any of them until Blue Exorcist '11.

I then started to watch more anime and it took me awhile to appreciate the anime scene.
It wasn't until '18 that I started to love the anime scene and watched several great anime ranging from my first ever completed anime "Attack on Titan" to "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime". I've watched many great anime since then.

However, I still have this feeling that I missed out on good anime throughout the years. I'm not sure if it's the nostalgia but seeing clips of '90s and early 2000s just makes me want to experience them.

I'm thinking of watching old anime now. I'm not planning to buy physical media and will just rely on Netflix and Crunchyroll to watch anime.

I've asked the anime sub to recommend a good place to start but most of the recommendations I got are from '18 onwards. I'm not really sure on where to start and what to watch first as well. I also don't know how or what to search for. I've seen some good recommendations like "Nana" but I haven't had the chance to start yet.

And so a few weeks ago, I want to start watching anime in chronological order.
Obviously this won't just be any anime though. I'll watch popular ones from the early days so I can see what it was like in the past.

I remember that the first anime I've watched was HunterxHunter.
I remember buying 2 HunterxHunter VHS tapes in 2001 but it wasn't completed. I've also thought of buying HunterxHunter as well but the collection is really expensive in my country.

However, I then realized I could just watch it on Netflix. I could have also bought a DVD copy but I don't want to spend money on something I'm not familiar with.

I've read that HunterxHunter '11 is a remake of the original '99 HunterxHunter and '11 is the more recommended one.

What I'm asking is, if a novice anime watcher can enjoy HunterxHunter '11?
