I teach high school, and I am done. I have been sad for two years, but this year I am finally angry. I've written lengthy rants before, but I am just so done.

I give all my students the same opportunity. I am an 8th grade English teacher, so my subject is required. Many of my students don't "get" it. I switch it up. I try group work, tried a modified reading workshop. Nothing works. I have a couple of students who do everything. The rest do not. I get students who have 20+ missing assignments. I beg them to do the work, and they don't.

Some days, I am cut short or interrupted. I have been told to train our substitute teachers to do a better job, so now I often have LESS class time to teach. I am expected to teach the same curriculum in less time, about 20 minutes less than my colleagues per class.

I have students who are severely disabled and require one on ones for parts of the day. I have students with severe emotional needs. I have students who are dyslexic. Students with ADHD. I have students who have been retained. My classroom is often chaotic. I try, try, try to differentiate. I buy my own materials. I give extra help. I offer different choices. They don't do anything. I have 180-200 students per day.

I am required to teach a scripted curriculum. I also have to incorporate another curriculum into that program. I am being pushed to add another. I am also expected to do project based learning.

My job is impossible. I am curt and irritable. I yelled at a few kids today. I don't have patience and I'm sad inside. They are children and they don't deserve my frustration.

I am seriously considering changing careers. I work 60-70 hours per week. I cry a lot. I am miserable. I feel like a failure and I'm burnt out.

Do elementary teachers have it better?
