As the title says I’m a grocery worker and I feel that all this stuff on social media about clapping and praising us is stupid. I know I’m not risking my life to give you your food, I chose my job just like anybody else and I don’t think you should be idolizing me or anyone else in retail. It feels like you want to make yourself feel better by giving us empty praise. I’m working to provide for myself and my family, I don’t need your praise. I also don’t want your used mask or your bottle of wine. I have been told by multiple customers that “thanks to you we can eat!” I get that but you’re also risking me by coming in, I would much rather you stay home and not give me COVID.

Edit: 1. I understand that I have a moral obligation to help people and I’m not complaining about that just the praise people give me for doing my job.

2. I risk my life for you to eat and I risk you giving me COVID

3. I also appreciate my coworkers and they all feel the same way I do that this is our job and we aren’t held up by it.

4. I’m not saying that you should be mean to us I just don’t want your praise I want to be treated as a normal person that isn’t risking my life to feed you because I’m not. I’m not enjoying your praise and it bothers me that you paint a picture that you’re personally feeding us.

5. I do appreciate the store letting us wash our hands and clean more often.

6. I do appreciate my boss for giving us $2 more an hour.

7. I do appreciate my health insurance

Ok so here is the update. I’m still getting a shit ton of comments of “you should quit your job if you feel this way”. I did not say I hated my job I said I feel that you shouldn’t be idolizing me and that your praise is empty and honestly offensive and makes me feel bad. I’m not complaining about my job I’m complaining about how you paint a picture that you’re feeding me or that you’re giving me my food. I’m not your personal shopper or your farmer or your grocer, I just work at the store that sells you your food. I didn’t get into debt to become a grocer I didn’t risk my health to give you your Doritos and Bud light. I’m just a person who is an employee doing their job and I’m not held up by it. I love my coworkers and I appreciate my supermarket but I don’t want to be held up as a hero it makes me uncomfortable.
