I can’t understand why my parents are spending so much money.

I’m European. I’m living in Coventry and currently I’m living with my parents in-law. I have flatmates too and that’s nice because they’re the same age as me.

My parents (I’m Polish) live in the countryside at the moment and they moved out from a bigger city when I was 2 and they lived for about 10 years in the countryside. We had horses, cows, chickens etc. Then they moved for a year to the city and again to the countryside. One month ago they moved again to the city (we moved many times in the city, a minimum of once a year).

They told me how difficult it was to live in the countryside because there are no jobs, not many shops, schools are faraway, etc. So they are living in the city at the moment. One of my parents’ friends was giving them a flat (2 bedrooms) for free but they couldn’t stay anymore so they rent a different flat (2 bedrooms) in a different location for £700 monthly. But after 3 months they were saying how they’re living in a flat and it wasn’t for them and they were looking to move to a house with a garden. They said that they have found a house, it’s a 2 bedroom house and they need to pay £1250 monthly for this house. I was shocked. We were living in houses in the countryside, we were living in houses when they moved in the city as well. I just can’t understand why they need a house when they had a flat for £700 monthly. I know it’s not for them but I can’t understand the price. We’re living in the nort of the UK but £1250 monthly is a lot. They needed to pay £2400 as a deposit + £150 as the deposit for the bills + £1250 for the first month’s rent + £150 for the deposit for the internet + £30 for the first internet bill. They also needed to pay £100 as a fee for some stuff (I don’t know what they are for). In total it’s £4090.

I just can’t understand why they need to pay so much. They could pay £700 monthly and have more money for food, a car, holidays, etc.
