So my(26M) girlfriend(26F) is half Italian-American, and is proud of her heritage and the traditions that come with it. However, her Italian-American family aren’t the most pleasant people.
Every time I go over to her family’s house, they are VERY critical of everything I do.
They tear apart my cooking (even though I am professional trained chef), say I am not good enough for their pristine niece, and that I am not manly enough in the traditional sense. It doesn’t help I am a bit of a nerd in the gaming sense.

Well she invited me to meet her gran in Italy this past weekend, and I was more than happy togosince I had never been to Italy. My girlfriend clarify that it was important that I be on my best behavior during our short visit.
So I prepare by dusting off my high school Italian, and get on the plane.
When we get to Italy, I greet her gran in Italian, and continue talking to her in Italian throughout the weekend.
Her family were SHOCKED that I could speak Italian, and kept trying to switch the conversation over to English.
But I would politely respond in Italian, saying I preferred to speak the language of her people.
This caused massive arguments between her family and my girlfriend, who thought I had made fun of them.
They ended up leaving a day earlier, after a massive fight where they called me an asshole.

As soon as we got back home, she broke it off with me, saying I disrespected her family because I “mocked them for being Italian”.
I tried to explain I was trying to be polite to her gran. But she said that by doing so, I made a joke out of her family’s heritage.
Not really sure what to think.

AITA?
