I've Been Flying for almost Thirty Hours and The Flight Attendants Won't Stop Crying

I boarded a flight from New York to Los Angeles. I felt like I’d been sitting in the airport waiting for my flight forever. I was tired, it was getting late, and I couldn’t wait to finally sit down in my seat and watch a movie.

I had been standing up for my entire 2-hour wait at the airport, and after going through the TSA scanner and getting picked out for a random pat down I figured things couldn’t get any worse.

I walked down the jetway and onto the plane, smiling at the flight attendants as I walked on board.

“Hello sir, can I see your ticket please?” A gruff voice said from behind me.

I turned around to see a gruff looking flight attendant. Ignoring his expression, I smiled and handed him my ticket.

“Thanks,” I said.

I walked down the aisle and found my seat about half way down the plane. I stowed my bag and sighed heavily as I sat down in my seat.

I was finally going to get to rest.

I looked around and noticed that most of the seats were filled. The window seat next to me was filled by an older looking man wearing a baseball cap and a young girl (who looked to be about 8) was in the seat next to him.

The young girl was reading a book while the man read a newspaper.

I smiled at them. “Hi there. How’s it going?”

The man grunted at me and the young girl kept reading.

Alright then. I thought.

I sighed and sat back in my seat, closing my eyes and listening to the flight attendants do their usual speech about how to buckle your seatbelt and what to do in the case of an crash.

Then the plane taxied out to the runway and we took off.

As we gained altitude, I opened my eyes. The gruff flight attendant was standing over me.

“Sir, do you want something to drink?”

I looked up at him. His eyes were red, his face was choked with tears, and his voice cracked as he spoke.

“Yeah,” I said. “A Sprite.”

He nodded, his body jolting with a sob.

A minute later he came back with my drink. When I went to grab it from him, he fell onto in the aisle, sobbing.

“Sir! Get up! Get up sir!” Someone cried.

The flight attendant got up off the floor. He was crying so hard he could barely see where he was going as he made his way up to first class.

I looked at the man next to me. “Is this guy ok?”

He kept reading the newspaper and didn’t say anything.

I looked at the girl. She looked up from her book and smiled. I felt bad for asking a kid, but since the man wasn’t going to talk to me, she was my only option.

“What’s up,” I asked. “The flight attendants seem really depressed.”

“Yeah,” she said. “This flight sure is depressing.”

I chuckled. “Yeah.”

A few hours went by as we flew across the country. I watched a couple of movies, read a few chapters of a book, and tried (and failed) to take a nap.

But for some reason, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t fall asleep.

After a few hours, the flight attendants came out and started passing out meals. The same flight attendant who had served me my Sprite came down the aisle, still sobbing.

I watched as he went up and down the aisle, serving meals one at a time.

“Here, sir,” he said. “Enjoy.”

The man next to me took his meal. “Thanks,” he said gruffly.

But when the flight attendant came up to me, he didn’t just hand me my meal. He set it on my tray table and fell onto the tray table, covering his face with his hands and crying.

“Hey! Get the fuck off me!” I said, disgusted.

He didn’t move. Instead, he just kept crying.

I looked at the man next to me. He just took his meal, opened it up, and started eating.

I looked at the girl. “Is he ok?”

But before she could answer, a voice came from the door at the front of the cabin.

*Thud.*

A flight attendant had just fallen to the floor.

She was also crying.

A voice came over the speakers.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. I’ve never been more humbled in my life. I am so honored to be flying you today. I am so honored to be a part of your life. I am so honored-“

He started to audibly weep.

I looked around and saw that everyone else was brushing it off. I was by far the most perturbed person on the plane.

Especially because I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

After the flight attendants stopped sobbing long enough to finish serving everyone their meals, I found myself so bored that I decided to do something crazy.

I stood up, walked up to first class, and turned around to walk towards the cockpit.

When I passed the bathroom thing I saw something that made my blood run cold.

Inside the bathroom, the flight attendant was in the fetal position on the floor.

*She was dead.*

Her eyes were wide and staring, she had no expression on her face, and a small trickle of blood came from her nose.

I may have been crazy, but I didn’t stop to look at her any longer. I kept going towards the cockpit.

When I opened the door, I found two men crying at the controls, each with their face in their hands.

I looked out the window and saw nothing but thin air.

We weren’t even flying.

“Where are we?” I asked.

One of the men looked up at me. He was crying so hard he couldn’t see. Tears streamed down his face.

“Whe-where are we?” He asked. “This…this is what you’re asking? *I’m honored.* I am so honored to be with you right now. I could never ask for anything else in life. But you…you have to know. *We are so high up.* Higher than you’ve ever been before.”

“Where are we?” I asked again.

“*I’m honored.* If you go back down the aisle,” he said. “The door is open.”

I shook my head. “What?”

“They’re waiting for you,” he said.

I shook my head. This guy was crazy. I backed out of the cockpit and walked back down the aisle.

As I approached the entrance to the cabin, I saw it.

A door.

The door was wide open, and I could see a gray void.

*It was outside the plane.*
