I am a student teacher for Senior AP Physics and was given the task to create a prompt for the students to work on as a project, and to get them interested in the topic, I wanted to run it by this sub. Here is my prompt.

What if Earth stopped spinning?

**Assumptions and Constants**
- (1) Earth and the atmosphere stop spinning instantaneously
- (2) Assume day-month-year remains constant with 24 hours in a day and 30 days in a month
- (3) Assume the earth is a perfect sphere with the equatorial and polar radii equal to 6371km
- (4) Assume the atmosphere is 10% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, 70% noble gases
- (5) Assume the Earth’s core remains molten with an inner core temperature of 5100 deg Celsius
- (6) Assume that the sun remains constant in luminosity.

**Questions and Considerations**
Given the information above, what would happen to life on Earth, the atmosphere, the ecosystem, the temperature, the oceans, the solar colonies, and how we would cope and adapt to the new reality.
Answer the following questions in your response:
- What would happen to the atmospheric gases as the earth stops spinning?
- What would happen to Earth’s magnetic field as the Earth stops spinning?
- What would happen to the Equatorial bulge as the Earth stops spinning?
- What would happen to the oceans and water as the earth stops spinning?
- What would happen to the Earth’s core as the Earth stops spinning?
- What would happen to the orbiting satellites as the Earth stops spinning?
- What would happen to the temperature gradient between the equator and the poles as the Earth stops spinning?
- How would the Earth stopping affect the interplanetary colonies?
- How would society cope with the drastic change?

Please help me brainstorm this thought experiment and I will use this to help write a prompt for my students. Thanks!

Edit: This has been most enlightening, I will update my prompt and have my students work on this. I will let them know that it is an impossible outcome.
