How to explain what I do to a toddler?

I’m nannying a toddler and her siblings. The other day I was in the nursery getting them all to sleep, so I decided to play an audio book as the child usually falls asleep quickly.

[context: so for this child (the youngest) I have an audio book of The Way of Kings playing]
[/context]

So while I’m in the nursery I get a text from my friend who also knows the family; she asks me to bring them to her house so she can “show them around”. I’m a little confused and ask what she means and she says her boyfriend has some “expensive toys” that the kids might like.

I think, okay, I guess I can take a drive to the boyfriend’s house, but then I have to go back home to get dinner for the kids and then bed.

I ask for better directions and I realize she was just using an excuse. She actually just wanted me to bring the kids so she could spend time with them. I then let out a confused “huh” and she asks me if I was expecting anything else.

I want to let her down easy so I say “not really.” She then responds with this:

“Good. What did you think the boyfriend’s expensive toys were?”

I let out another confused “huh”, I don’t say anything else but she responds “boyfriend’s expensive toys” , “what do you think they really are”

I finally respond, “I’m nannying 3 kids and teaching 7th grade english, at least 4 times a week”

She responds “so what did you think the boyfriend’s expensive toys were?” “I’d love to know because I’m curious”

And I say “I thought they were his children, I mean he could have any number of children. My assumption was that he had at least 6-8, and that he didn’t teach them probably, he doesn’t even know them, so he’s paying for them to have a nanny. The toys would be the same toys my kids have, and he would want me to bring the kids over so he could spend more time at home and get to know them better and have a better understanding of the “expensive toys” he’s paying for”
“they’re not old enough to have an expensive toy collection, and if it were a car collection, I would have been driving them over”

Then I get a text from my friend saying “thank you for not assuming something really bad”
