How to tell if your date is not actually a criminal?

So, I was talking to this guy I was dating (the two other times we went on a date I had a really good time), and he told me a story about one of his old coworkers. He told me a story about how he was suspended for two months because he threatened to rape one of his coworkers. Apparently he was being a dick and decided to pull a gun on them and tell them he would rape them if they didn’t do their job. I am very uncomfortable at the fact that he saw nothing wrong with telling me this, and I am very confused as to why he is no longer in jail. I have tried to Google if this is a common thing? But I couldn’t find anything.
