So for the purpose of a story I have to take a stand on whether we think AI is a person or not. What is your take?

*In my story:* I consider AI to be software, a programming, and not a sentient being.

Of course there are different types of AI according to this story.

**Tier 1:** is the type of AI that can do one thing or a set of things, like we have in real life today with for instance a toaster, a microwave, or a washing machine.

**Tier 2:** is the type of AI that can do a lot of things but can only be used by one person at a time, like our mobile phones. This type of AI does not even know who is using it, it simply detects the presence of a human and targets its questions towards that person.

**Tier 3:** is the type of AI that can do a lot of things and can be used by people in real time. This type of AI can also remember who you are and learn from that knowledge and make decisions based on that knowledge. A Tier 3 AI also knows where you are in the world so it can make decisions based on your location. But it's still not sentient. It's just really really smart.

**Tier 4:** is a sentient AI. So according to my story, a Tier 4 AI is a person.

So we have to consider different types of AI, because I find it hard to say that for instance a washing machine is a sentient being and a person. On the other hand, it's totally easy to imagine a Tier 4 AI doing things that most humans have never done, so those are my thoughts. How do you think it should be?
