Why did the world abandon the gold standard?

I feel like even the most libertarian parts of the world would rather keep their currency on a gold standard than what is essentially a system of printing currency out of thin air.<br><br>What causes countries to go away from the gold standard, and why does it seem to be better than the standard created after that?
