My take on it so far:

1) The API access is harder, more expensive, and offers less functionality than alternatives like Mastodon, and it’s only getting worse.

2) He’s firing key employees, so there’s no one to maintain the service or set priorities. He’s even getting rid of the volunteer mods.

3) He’s firing the people who manage the servers, so they’re running out of capacity and being forced to switch to cheaper servers which are getting overloaded.

4) He’s breaking the app on Android by constantly pushing out buggy updates for some reason.

5) The algorithmic feed is getting worse because he’s firing the people who were supposed to tweak it.

6) He’s pushing away users by massacring the UI to be more childish and cartoonish.

7) He’s pushing away users by letting tweets from unsubscribed accounts show up in the algorithmic feeds.

8) He’s pushing away users by removing all the features that made it different from other platforms.

Mastodon has gotten a lot of new users, but it’s getting a lot of spam.
