Why do Americans care about what other countries do?

It's mostly in regards to gun laws, but I've noticed that some people say that we should follow what some other countries do. Why the hell would we do that? What does another country have to do with ours? Why should we compare ourselves to other countries? It just seems like a bunch of people just want to live in another country, and use that as the reason.
