What's the problem with money being digital?

I'm currently trying to build a monetary system for my world and came across the problem of having to fork out money any time being on the road. I know this is a common problem that can be found in many rpgs and animes. But i could not find any satisfying answer on why money is not just digital and can be put on a card so you dont have to carry cash with you.
