In what ways was Pearl Harbor the apotheosis of the Japanese Empire?

Many historians have argued that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the beginning of the end for the Japanese Empire. However, I am instead interested in why this moment in their history was actually the *apotheosis* of the empire. What did this moment represent for Japan in terms of economic, cultural, military, and territorial power?
