I didn’t call CPS because I’m childfree

I’m not a fan of kids, but I’m having a hard time getting over this. I live in a pretty nice “working class” neighborhood. Lots of families, lots of kids, and everyone is generally friendly.

I have one neighbor with a boy and girl (4 and 6). Just over the weekend I was in my yard when I noticed the little boy digging in the mulch in front of the fence that separates my yard from theirs, and his sister was digging in my yard, kind of right where the fence ends. Anyway, they were obviously doing something. They were trying to create a hole to get from one side of the fence to the other.

I’m not sure if this makes me a monster or not, but I’m not checking on them if they are over in my yard. I’m not calling CPS if I see them doing something risky. I’m not opening my door if they end up on my side of the fence.

What if the little boy gets stuck and can’t breathe? What if the little girl climbs a tree in my yard and falls, breaking her arm? What if they are in my yard and a storm starts and there is lightening, and the kids get electrocuted by something. What if the little boy hits the little girl with a rock and it busts her eye open?

I don’t care. I’m not their mother. I’m not their father. I don’t have any sort of responsibility to them. I’m not going to check on them. I’m not going to warn their parents, even though we are on good terms.

I just don’t care, because I’m childfree.
