Thoughts on Taylor Swift’s feminist message?

As a 40-year-old woman born in the late 70’s I grew up with an emphasis on my own autonomy, “you go girl” long after the 1960’s feminist revolution. And as a result I have always had a very high value for self-respect but as an athiest I never knew anything about witches.

For that reason I find it so cool how this new generation is embracing the witch aesthetic and by extension the respect for self and female empowerment and freedom through their pop culture.

So, Taylor Swift just won album of the year at the Grammys and she is so good at communicating to young women what strength and independence and knowing your worth as a person is.

Swifties, does she do a good job of being a positive role model? What are her lyrics like in that respect? And also, I haven’t heard her specifically express her political views much, but I would imagine she would be cheered on as a feminist by mainstream feminists who are “intersectional” (more mainstream and demographically diverse, “liberal” etc.)

But does she do a good job communicating to young girls that autonomy is possible for them too? That she is able to do what she does because she is free? Is that something she talks about?
