These companies think I am an idiot and it is a turn off. Has anyone ever been job shopping and thought “I get it. You have money. Stop waving it in my face”?

I posted a few days ago about how I was looking for a new job and got tons of good advice.

I always use Indeed and LinkedIn because I know them best and the two I know best. Lots of good advice on other sites and tips/tricks.

This morning I decided to expand my job search. I think I might have gone too wide.

I went onto one of those general “here are jobs. Apply for them” web sites.

I always get a bunch of hits for the same job from different agencies. This is normal. I usually ignore them and apply directly to the company but sometimes apply for the agency posting if it looks better than the company’s one.

But there are always these things that say “find your dream job. Make $200,000 a year” . You know, those “survey” sites.

So I decided to go after it. There were several but as expected most of them were junk companies for junk jobs that I would never be interested in. That said, there were a few that had possibilities.

I take the survey, answer all kinds of questions, and things start popping up. I apply. I apply. I trash the crap jobs. I apply.

There was one that I thought was really good. I won’t go into details but I was actually really excited. It was a very large, well known company that I was thrilled to be contacting.

I hit submit on the application and get to a screen that had all the “great jobs” and the one I applied for was up top. It said “did we miss anything? Did we miss your dream job?” And I thought “finally, here is a survey that doesn’t suck. I can tell them the types of companies and things I am looking for and find some places that I haven’t thought of.

Nope. A commercial for a job search database. And as I am watching a commercial for $9.99/ month this guy is waving $100 bills around and talking about how he couldn’t believe he was going to make so much money from this job search database!

Then another. Apply for a job, click on it, and there is some woman talking about how she didn’t know how to job search until she went on their website and now she makes $250,000 and can travel and all kinds of other nonsense.

Honestly I am starting to get pissed off. It reminds me of those text messages from car dealerships that say “THIS IS NOT A SCAM. YOU REALLY WON! COME ON DOWN AND FIND YOUR DREAM CAR” And then I go down and it’s a crappy car with 90,000 miles on it.

I just don’t know how people fall for that crap any more. I mean I get it. Your company has money. Great. But you are also greedy and sucky and I don’t want to work with people who are that cheesy.
