Why do people care so much about where I decide to go on vacation?

I’ve traveled to Ukraine, Turkey, India, Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, etc, and the amount of people who go crazy on travel chambers when these destinations are mentioned is an absolute joke.

I’m not sure who those people think they are, or why they believe that their opinions matter so much. It’s like I decide to go visit my grandparents, and a large amount of people in the nearby town decide to gang up and tell me why it’s a bad idea. And why should I care about their opinions anyway? I don’t know them, and they don’t know me, so if they think they know what’s best for me, they’re sadly mistaken.

It’s not just this sub. Every travel sub gets like this. I once made a post asking about people’s opinions of South Korea as a tourist destination, and I got several responses saying that the food is disgusting, the people are rude, and that the country is boring. One comment even said something along the lines of “trust me, I’ve been there for 2 weeks. You will hate it”. I went anyway, and the food was amazing, the people were extremely polite and respectful, and the country as a whole was very interesting. I loved it, and if I listened to the people who were saying negative things, I would have missed out on a great experience.

There was another post I saw of someone asking about visiting Japan. The top comment was “it’s overhyped and the people are assholes”. That comment made it to the top spot on a post asking about OP’s upcoming dream vacation, and this person felt it was important to say that everyone in an entire country are assholes? I’m sure they think they’re helping, but really they look like idiots. I’ve been to Japan several times, and the people were wonderful. I’m sure there are assholes everywhere, but I never encountered any.

This kind of mindset is something you see a lot on travel subs. I can’t tell if they feel like they’re helping, or if they feel like they’re some kind of gatekeeper who needs to tell everyone else what they can and can’t do.

One more example was someone who was asking about visiting Turkey, and someone in the comments said “I’m from Istanbul, and I will only say this- if you cannot handle the idea of possibly being bombed, then you should not come here. That’s all I will say”. That’s an incredibly stupid thing to say, and this person, for some reason, thinks that they know better than anyone else whether or not I can handle something, and that gives them the right to tell me what I can and cannot do.

I don’t know if these people get off on sounding scary and intimidating, or if they’re just delusional and think that the world has to listen to them. But either way, it’s annoying as hell. I don’t care what you have to say about where I decide to go. It’s not about you, and you don’t know better than I do.
