I can’t stop crying about what happened in Texas on Tuesday because I can’t stop thinking about what my sister went through when she had cancer

My sister had a rare type of cancer called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. It’s so rare it only affects two in a million people - which is why I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to identify her. But when she was diagnosed, she was told that she needed to have chemo quickly. But then there was a delay, and her chemo was put back several weeks, and then several more. I can’t tell you exactly how long she went waiting for over a year for chemo, but she was in incredible pain and was very anxious due to the delay. In the end, she had to have a huge operation to remove the cancer from her body. The operation was so big that it left her with ongoing medical issues that she will have to deal with for the rest of her life. She’s under a lot of medication. She can’t eat certain foods and has issues with other food. It’s not just medical issues she has, she has ongoing trauma from the constant delay and what they put her through.

She’s one of the lucky ones. She’s still alive. But when I hear what happened to the children in Texas, I can’t stop thinking about her. The pain. The terror. And I just can’t stop crying for the parents who continue to suffer, and for the children who suffered before they died.
