What if any historical events are widely misunderstood by the general public?

I think this is a good opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about historical events, and to show how history can be somewhat nuanced in a way that is lost on those who don’t study it. I’ll go first.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people believe that the ancient Greeks as a whole believed that the stories of Zeus and other Gods to be historically true, and that the only people who were skeptical of these stories were a select few like Plato. In reality, if you go back and read ancient Greek sources, skeptical views of the validity of these stories were more widespread than you would think. As an example, Herodotus frequently questions the validity of the stories of the Gods and tries to find out the historical basis for them.
