Why do high schoolers think they can figure out gender

Like "I am trans and the school needs to use my pronouns" or "I am genderfluid and you need to treat me differently depending on the gender I identify as". This is a time in your life when you are supposed to be figuring out the basics of your life, not this fad nonsense.
