An actual AI ambushed me today

Today is my first day of work teaching at a university in Asia, and I am talking to the dean of my department. I've lived in Asia for more than 15 years now and have worked here even longer, so talking to her was easy. In fact, it was one of the most natural conversations I've ever had with anyone in a position of authority at any of the several Asian universities where I have taught.

She has recommended someone to shadow me in my new job, and I am discussing the details with her. But just as we are about to conclude, she looks surprised and ambushed by something, and exclaims loudly and passionately, in the style typical of people in her culture: "Siri, Siri, stop it! We are talking! We are talking!" I have never seen her so angry, and I don't know what she is talking about until she explains that her iPhone AirPods keep sending my English to an AI who keeps responding loudly in Chinese. She is amazed at how stupid it is. How could it ever think she is talking to Chinese speakers if I am speaking to her in English? So she follows up with a blast of unpleasent-sounding Mandarin Chinese that seems to be a standard meme or idiom. Siri is now quiet, but she is still upset about it.

So that's my experience with AI at work today.
