I made $400 competing in a high stakes tournament on the popular game Among Us.

\[TLDR: I'm a pretty good Among Us player, so I take on a local pro player in a tournament. I end up winning the whole tournament and I'm pretty happy about it. Also this is a throwaway account, because my real account is connected to my real life and I want to keep that on the low down.\]

I'm sure a lot of you know how to play Among Us. It's a pretty simple game that has recently blown up with a bunch of different "pro" players, so I thought I would give it a try myself. I've always thought of myself as an excellent gamer and have been playing games for most of my life. I've always been more drawn to competitive games, so I knew that if I could get good at Among Us it would be fun to play. I didn't really have any plans at first, but then I found out that the pro player for the game lived in my city.

I don't know if you guys know who it is, but his name is X and he is one of the most popular high level Among Us streamers. So I thought it would be cool to play against him. Turns out, it's not too hard to get in touch with him and he was willing to set up a small tournament with a few of his other friends. I asked him about the stakes, and he told me that they like to play with "high stakes" when they play competitively. I didn't know exactly what that meant at the time.

So I get in touch with a few of X's friends, and they all seem pretty cool. They say they're setting up a tournament in a few days, and that I should come on down. I think at this point it's probably important to note that these guys aren't just any ordinary gamers, but they're actually all millionaires. I didn't know this until I actually met them in person, but it turns out they're all the sons of wealthy business owners in my city. So they don't really have to work, and they're able to pursue their own hobbies without too much of a worry.

So they're all sitting around in this house that's just filled with expensive things and video games, and they're bragging about their different video game accomplishments and trophies. They're all pretty nice guys, but it's clear that they're not used to interacting with people outside of their circle. I'm getting a little annoyed, but I realize that these guys aren't trying to be pricks. They're just a little ignorant when it comes to anything outside of their little bubble. Then it hits me: they're not just millionaires. They're also probably a lot dumber than me.

As we sit down to start the tournament, they tell me that the "high stakes" are $400 per match, winner take all. I'm not perfect at mental math, but I know that there are 5 of us, and if I'm able to win the whole tournament then I'll be able to make a pretty penny. One of the guys notices that I'm just wearing a t shirt and sweatpants, and he asks me if I'm prepared to lose a lot of money. I tell him I'm not too worried about it, and he just kind of laughs and then goes back to his phone.

We play the first round, and right from the start I take control of the table. None of the other guys really know what they're doing, and I'm able to trick all of them and get a few kills. I end up getting two more wins in a row, and they're all shocked at how good I am. They're all getting pretty cocky so they don't even realize that I'm in the lead. I only need one more win to take the whole tournament, and they're all still trying to fight it out for second place. They're all placing side bets and trying to make deals with each other and it's just hilarious.

I play against X in the final round, and right from the start I know I have it in the bag. They're all still trying to figure out the rules and I've already memorized the whole map. I was able to get a few kills without anyone noticing, but then I realized that I was able to trick X into killing me. I ended up losing that round, and I was a little mad that they had figured me out.

X was pretty happy that he won, but I told him not to worry about it. He asked me what I meant, and I told him that I was going to win the next round and take the whole tournament. He was skeptical, but I told him I was positive I could do it. He laughed again and I just smiled. I knew that he was going to feel stupid after I won.

It took me a few rounds, but I was able to get a few more wins and I knew that I had it in the bag. X and the other guys were all arguing about who was going to come in second place, but I was already celebrating my win. I told them that I was ready to quit and take my money, and they all looked at me in shock. They didn't really know how to react, but they all ended up just congratulating me and telling me that I was a great player. I took my winnings and left, and I didn't hear from any of them again for a while.

I ended up using the money I won to help pay some bills and put towards some of my debt. I was pretty happy that I had been able to make some extra money doing something that I love, and I thought it was just a funny little side venture that I had gone on. But then a few weeks later, I got a call from X. He congratulated me again on my win, and then asked if I wanted to play some more. I told him that I was happy to play, but that I didn't really have any more money to gamble with. He told me that it was okay, because they wanted me to play in some more tournaments. I asked him what was in it for me, and he told me they would give me another $400 just for showing up. I was a little surprised, but I figured I would hear him out.

He tells me that him and his friends want to keep getting better, but they need someone to push them to get there. They don't want to play against just anyone, because they know I'm by far the best player. I'm flattered, and I tell him that I'll play. We set up a time to meet, and I go over to their house again. They're all really happy to see me, and we sit down to play. I end up destroying them again, and they all tell me how impressed they are.

I end up playing with them a few more times, and every time I'm able to beat them. They're all really happy to be getting better, and they offer me a job playing with them every week. I'm a little confused, so I ask them what they mean. They tell me that they want me to be their personal coach, and that they're willing to pay me $1,000 a month to come over and play a few times a week. I'm a little stunned at first, but I realize that it's actually a pretty good deal. I tell them I'll do it, and we set up a time to meet every week.

I've been doing it ever since then, and I just got my first check in the mail today. I was pretty surprised to see how much money I had actually made, but it's definitely worth it. I don't really have to do that much work, and I get to play Among Us as much as I want. Plus I'm already a pretty good player, so I know I have job security. Also this is the first time in my life that I've ever felt like a celebrity, because they've been telling all of their friends about me and how good of a player I am. So I get to feel like a cool guy who's really good at video games, and I get paid for it. I know that it's probably not going to last forever, but I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

Edit: Wow, didn't expect this to blow up so much. Also I should probably mention that I'm 20 years old and the other guys are a little older than that. Also for anyone wondering I live in Canada, and X is a pretty well known player in the Canadian gaming community. But like I said before I don't want to reveal too much about my real identity, so I'm going to keep the rest of the details on the low down.

Edit part 2: Just a little update for everyone. I've gotten a lot of offers and requests in my DMs, and I'm really thankful for that. I didn't expect this whole thing to blow up so much. I'm going to go through all of the requests I've gotten and I'll probably get back with some of you guys tomorrow. I'm also pretty tired right now, so I'm just going to go to sleep. Thanks again to everyone who's been so supportive, and I'll talk to you all tomorrow.

Edit part 3: I'm back. I've gone through all of my DMs and I've picked out a few of you guys that I'm interested in talking to. I'll send you all a message shortly. Also I've had a few people ask about my ethnicity, and I should probably mention that I'm Asian. It doesn't really matter, but some people asked about it in the comments. Also thank you to all of the Asian people who have reached out and supported me. I appreciate it.
