I’m exhausted, and I really hope this isn’t the future.

This is my 3rd year teaching, and my second time teaching 3rd grade. My class is a bit of a challenge behavior-wise, but that’s not the problem.

I consider myself a relatively modern teacher. I throw technology in where I think it makes sense, and avoid it when I don’t. In my school, we have a “learning management system” called Canvas that we’re basically required to use. We put our lesson plans on there, and assignments, and my principal occasionally comments on how it looks. Like, if my font is too big or the wrong color.

Canvas is also where kids turn in their work. I have 24 kids, and every day I get probably 10-15 separate assignments turned in several times a day, each one with messages to me like “I’m sorry I’m a little late turning this in, we lost power for a second and my computer restarted” or “We got home super late last night, so I’m doing it now”.

This is exhausting. I regularly spend 2-3 hours a day responding to messages about when assignments were turned in. I don’t care that they were late for 5 minutes; I just stamp it on Canvas and move onto the next one.

This is the future, right? I don’t have a choice in whether or not we use Canvas (especially since I have kids who are quarantined at home right now), but it feels like a Sisyphean task.

Are other people dealing with this? How do you handle it?
