Why is America (the US) such a cold society?

Hello everyone, I am a 35 year old woman from South America, I’ve lived for five years in Europe and for the last two years I’ve lived in the US (Florida and California).

I find that people in the US are not very nice and there is a lot of individualism, which makes me miss my home country (Chile). In my home country, for example, families can have dinner at a restaurant and get a three course meal (appetizer, entree and dessert) for $15 per person, tops. Here it’s normal to pay $15 for a sandwich and a glass of wine at a mid-range restaurant.

I also find that my friends back home are more willing to go the extra mile to help you when you are in need. They will lend you money, drive you around, help with errands, give you food, etc.

Yes, we pay a lot more in taxes (45% income tax) but we receive a lot of benefits in exchange (free healthcare and education) and overall we live much more frugal lives. I find the US to be a very classist and capitalist society where a few people at the top get to be very rich and everyone else struggles.

I know that this is a frugal chamber but I think that being frugal is not only about money, it’s about human connections and living a simple life as well. I find that in the US people work a lot of hours and then go home and watch Netflix. They don’t really connect with other people that much. I find that to be a very cold and lonely society.

Has anyone lived in a different country and felt this way about the US as well?
