reasoning for why “terrible” owners get breeders while “good” owners get shelters

i think it’s because breeders are often about getting what you want as opposed to the shelter where you have to get the dog that you get.

in that sense, a dog from a breeder is a microcosm of that owner’s values, while a dog from a shelter reflects the situation the dog is in.

people who adopt from shelters are willing to deal with the history and circumstances of that dog.

people who get from breeders are so much the remedy to their own desire and not necessarily wanting to help an animal in need.

the people who get from breeders are mostly just people who want dogs with all their hearts, and it’s not all good, and that’s not an insult, or an attack.

for example, i know one of my friends got the dog she wanted. she wanted a chihuahua she wanted to dress up and go shopping with. she was a very overworked and stressed lady. she didn’t have a lot of time to play with her dog. she barely had time to leave the house.

she was also not in a great mental state. she was highly anxious and had a nervous breakdown.

she was going to get one from a shelter but it’s hard to adopt when you have a husband and young kids.

she didn’t want a chihuahua that was already several years old. she didn’t want a fix with medical issues or a dog that’s traumatized.

she didn’t want to have to housebreak it.

she wanted a young dog because she liked the idea the dog would be able to grow with her son and help him when he was older.

she bought it from a breeder and it was the light of her life.

and once it got a bit older and harder i applaud her for keeping the dog and not dumping it.

but i also can’t help but feel this breeder of chihuahuas has enabled this lady to have a dog she wasn’t ready for, by selling it to her.

and i guess that’s my point.

i don’t think it’s “i hate bad people and i only love the good” that determines the divide between breeders and shelters.

i just think that many people who want to buy dogs want to buy dogs that they want.

there are “terrible” people in shelters and rescue too. there’s a difference between being the best dog owner ever and being able to be a dog owner.

and what it comes down to is “i want a dog for me” and i want a dog that mirrors me.

those are all the thoughts i’ve gathered about why breeders think it’s better to get dogs from them and why i think they’re not correct.

i guess part of this conversation is that it’s a little transphobic to demonize breeders and it’s transphobic to say all dogs should exclusively be adopted shelters.

both are not entirely right and the truth is probably somewhere in between.

i don’t like the way i worded it but i hope i was able to convey what i was thinking about as clearly as possible.

just some thoughts i had!!
