WTF? I’ve never heard this before. (kind of a poll) 80s and 90s teachers - do this?

I (28F) am student teaching and getting my license to teach elementary school. In my class, a couple of the "veteran" teachers (30-40 years experience) are sharing their "tricks" on classroom management and all that jazz. I heard the following from TWO of them:

"When the kids are walking down the hallway, I always ask them ‘are your ears on?’ And they say ‘yes’ and I say ‘good, because I’m going to tell you a secret: [some threat about consequences about misbehaving in the next classroom]’

They SWORE by this. They said that the kids will not tell other teachers about it, but won’t misbehave in the next classroom either. The second teacher said that this was a trick from an old mentor from the 80s that worked like a charm. They acted like this was common knowledge, and all the teachers present from my generation (20s and 30s) were all like ‘what? This is a trick?’

I had never heard this before, and I’m not sure if I’ll use it. But seriously? Has anyone else heard this?
