To make this short, we just went through an airport in the USA and there was a person going through security who purposefully reached down and YANKED my wife's bag off the scanner. It had her laptop, passport, phone, wallet, jewelry, and more. We looked around but the person running off with it was already at the other end of the airport.

The airport is telling us that there's nothing they can do since they "can't be held accountable for criminal activity".

Are there cameras at airports? What can we do here? We've lost EVERYTHING important to us.

UPDATE:

First of all, I am very thankful for your kind words and support. I'm overwhelmed and I'm very happy to see that people care, are responsive, and are on our side.

Yes the airport has cameras, the police are looking at them and they're going to review them. They said they will send us an email update in 24-48 hours.

The police also said that this has happened elsewhere and in another airport in the USA, someone was arrested because of this.

We are going to a local police station now to file another report for insurance information.

We are going to have to rethink our travel plans and I'm going to spend all night on the phone with the banks, credit cards, and passport agency.

They recommended that we not purchase new phones immediately until we can get to the passport agency because we will need our passports to purchase new phones because they said the stores will want to see ID and may not accept a driver's license from another state.

My wife is pretty upset and her trip is kind of ruined at this point so we may just cancel all of our plans and head back home.

I am happy that I purchased trip insurance as some people have mentioned but trip insurance doesn't cover everything and it's a hassle to deal with.

This is an absolute nightmare and we're very upset right now.

Also people are saying that we should've stayed with our bags. Yes that's obvious, but when you're going through airport security, you can't always be with your bags. There's no way to always stay with your bags or be actively watching your bag at all times.

I'm not sure what else to do but just go through the motions and wait and see what happens.

I really appreciate all of your help and advice.
