Got a better idea for my job then my boss sent me home with a paycut

I work for a company that sells water services and I’m the guy that goes out and does the installation a new customers and performs maintenance on existing customers. The boss hired another guy to do this with me and we both worked good for a while. We’d split up on Mondays and each do half the jobs. I do a little bit better than he does, so I would have more time in the week to do other jobs like maintenance at existing customers or stuff like cleaning the shed and stuff.

Well the boss comes to me and tells me he’s hired 5 more guys (which is true) and he’s going to have them do the maintenance and all that so I can focus on the new customers and my coworker can too. Now I know my boss is a cheap ass so I figured he was just going to try and send these 5 guys out to do jobs with a little bit of training and he was going to pay them minimum wage. I asked him how he was going to hire 5 guys and have them go out and do jobs on their own.

He told me he was going to have them shadow us for a few days and that’s it. I told him that was a bad idea and he’d end up losing money on the new customers because they’d get so many calls complaining the jobs weren’t done right. I suggested he hire 2 guys and have them shadow us for maybe 6 months before he sent them out to do jobs on their own. That would save him a lot more money than hiring 5 guys and risking losing money on a lot of jobs. He could also pay us more and have us train these two guys for the rest of the year.

Well I just got a call from my boss this morning asking me if I can come in to talk. I figured he was going to talk to me about my idea, but boy was I wrong. He tells me my idea was so good he thinks the two of us training them would make the company more money than it’s making now by sending us out to do jobs. So he’s sending me home and giving me 15% less pay and he won’t let me come back to work until he needs us again.

This happened a little bit ago so I haven’t had time to think about my next moves yet. I’m not in a dire situation, but you never know how long you’ll go without work in this economy so it’s not great, but I think it’ll all work out in the end. Just thought this was a funny story to share, especially since my boss is a cheap ass and I wouldn’t think he’d be okay with paying somebody to not work.
