Did America really go insane for Pocahontas?

I'm pretty sure Disney, as well as many other sources, exaggerate the story of Pocahontas saving John Smith and the relationship they had, if it even happened at all.
But my main question is if Pocahontas was really as big a deal in America as I've read that she was posthumously.
I read that she was considered one of the “mothers of the country” back in the 19th century.
Was this really true?
