When you’re the only minimalist in the family

When you tell your mom you’re getting rid of your kitchen utensils and she says she’ll hold onto them because you’ll need them.

When your dad says you need to teach yourself to grow out of being lazy instead of giving up your car and use public transport.

When your sister says you’ll regret selling your designer shoes from when you were in middle school.

When your husband says you need to be prepared for our next baby.

When your adult-ish son is scratching his arse about how you got rid of all his childhood things.

When your adult-ish daughter says to not touch her things and that she doesn’t want a minimalist room.

I’ve gotten rid of my entire kitchen and replaced it with an instant pot, air fryer, coffee maker and a microwave. I have 5 plates, 1 set of utensils and one set of pots for sauce and for water. I have one cutting board, one knife, one frying pan and one spatula.

I use a metal strainer, metal colander and metal salad bowl, honestly I feel so much better with the weight of the kitchen off my shoulders. I didn’t think being minimalist would help me until I really dove into it. I used to think I didn’t have clutter but the reality is that I did and I was just making excuses for myself. I sold my car, donating it wasn’t an option since they were going to auction it off.

I have only 3 tshirts and 2 leggings honestly I don’t even care much for those I just don’t want to spend money to get rid of them. I want to treat myself to new clothes when the time is right and I can afford it without hurting my pocket too much.

We have 8 throw pillows on the couch and a throw blanket. That’s it. Our living room is empty except for the TV honestly I want to get rid of my couch and I have but my husband refuses to let me sell it. The couch has sentimental value to him and he’s willing to store it in our cramped and full garage. The garage is full of toys and junk. That’s it. I have one mental health-focused book and 3 baby dictionaries. The baby dictionaries I have are all in different languages because my husband and I want our kid to grow up bilingual.

I have 2 baby hats and a couple of pacifiers. I’m planning on going for 3 years of no buying at all and I’d love to see how that goes. I don’t want to buy anything for our baby at all and I don’t want to waste our money on things that we don’t need.

I think we’ve done it right with our oldest but the worry of fucking up the next one is there. I feel like they have too many things already and I don’t see the point of them having stuff. I don’t want to waste money on stuff they’ll never use.

I’m a stay at home mom and my stay at home mom friends have been berating me for getting rid of my son’s things. His toys, clothes, books, etc. I kept the things that he would use and I threw away the things he wouldn’t, I gave away the things he hadn’t touched in a year and I sold the things he’d never use again.

I just feel like they’re judging me but I don’t care what they think.

I’m comfortable and content with my choices.
