I'm a 30 year old married man with two young girls, and I've been writing this book since I was 17 or so. Back then, it was more of a collection of other stories and ideas all jumbled up together. By the time I was about 25, I had something resembling a single, coherent plot. I'd write a few pages here and there, but it all just felt so... meaningless and shallow for some reason. It wasn't until I was about 28 that I was able to distill it down to its core, and I'm just now starting to feel like I have what I want. It's not done yet. It's not even close. But I got to thinking, here I am posting on Chambers everyday anyway. I like a good review of my work. Why don't I put it out there for everyone to see? So here it is, so far. I'll probably post an update once or twice a week.

If you read it, I very much appreciate that. If you have any feedback or a critique, that's just so much the better. I can only hope that by the time I'm done, I'll have given life to a story that you will all love just as much as I do.

---

# The Legend of Artaeus - Prologue

There was once a great and powerful empire, its origin lost to the dim and dusty recesses of history. Some said it was born of the gods, in the first blush of their love affair with mortal men. Others claimed it was the bastard child of the caps of west and east, and that it had crawled forth from the ruins of both with the ferocity of a wounded animal. History itself, however, seemed to indicate that the empire was born in darkness. That it was a time of great strife and woe on earth.

The empires of the east had crumbled into squabbling city states, and the wars of western peoples still raged across the land.

Then came the Gallefs, a barbarian horde from an island in the southern sea, leaving death and destruction in their wake. The city states of the east were the first to fall. Then the Gallefs made their way across the western expanse, burning and killing everything in their path. When they were finished, there was nothing left in their wake but the devastation of war and the desolation of death itself.

But from the shadows of the Gallefs' destruction emerged a figure, and with it, the empire. A great and powerful sorcerer, one that would bring peace and prosperity to the world after the wars and plagues that had destroyed it, but at what cost? His name is still whispered in fear and awe.

He is the bringer of light and darkness, and his name is Kane.
