Yes, I'm not fond of AI. I'm a teacher, and I've had to deal with the worst of it over the last 6 months. First, we get a bunch of "how AI is going to make your life better" training over the summer, and how it will improve student learning. Then, students start using it for cheating, and we deal with that. The school administration tries to crack down on it, and we end up with a slew of meetings about how AI is the devil. Finally, after hearing about how wonderful and terrible AI is, it finally shows up in our curriculum. Specifically, we're doing a lesson on how to use AI for creative writing. Because, you know, the kids love it.

In the lesson, we're supposed to use AI to generate some writing prompts, then have the kids write a story using those prompts. Except, I've got a 3rd of the class that's got no idea how chat GPT works, a 3rd that are eager to try it, and a 3rd that are outright hostile to it, because they don't want to be forced to use it.

So I started the exercise, and I asked the kids if they had any questions. One kid asked if we're going to learn how to stop people from using AI for cheating. Nope. Another kid asked if we were going to discuss the ethics of AI. Nope, we're just going to use it. I pointed out that I was just following the curriculum as it was laid it, so I couldn't address those concerns.

Next, I generate the prompts using the AI, and one of the prompts is "write a story about a character that is a prideful, spoilt, and selfish vegetarian dragon". It was an obviously generated prompt, because the AI tends to produce things that are overly specific, but also completely random. One of my students then said "This is ridiculous, I hate it. Why are we doing this?"

So then, I started going around to the kids that were having trouble with the assignment and were getting frustrated, and tried to help them out. One kid was having a hard time using the program, so I helped them with it. Another kid had technical issues, with his computer freezing, so I tried to help him troubleshoot it. Another kid wasn't sure how to make the prompt make sense, so I helped them brainstorm.

I was dealing with a technical issue with one of the kids, when one of the kids, a girl, started crying loudly. I had to ask another kid to help me deal with her, because she was getting too distraught for me to handle alone.

Eventually, I got the technical issues dealt with, and everyone was working on their assignment. I decided to take a walk around the room, to see how they were doing. When I get to the kid that was having trouble with the prompt, I notice that she's got a story written, but it doesn't match the prompt. She wrote a story about a character that is a proud, kind, and selfless dragon. She got rid of the "spoilt and selfish" parts, and replaced them with "kind and selfless", and she was writing a story about a dragon who helps their friends out. When I asked her about it, she said "who would write a story about an unlikeable character?" So, I told her that it was a good choice, and I left it at that.

Finally, the class is over, and the kids are leaving. As they leave, one of the kids who was hostile to AI comes over to me, and said "Thank you for your help with the assignment, even though I didn't want to do it. It turned out to be a lot of fun."

On my way home, I was thinking about the job I have as a teacher. I want to teach, I love teaching, and teaching means helping the kids. If that means teaching them AI, that's what I'll do. And when they have questions about the lesson, I'll help them, whether I agree with the lesson or not. I've got to be there for the kids, no matter what.

It's just a shame I have to do it in a world filled with stupid fucking AI's.
