Something walked into my campsite in the middle of the night and... I don't know what to make of it

I was on a camping trip with my daughter over the weekend. We were at one of those state park campsites that had about ten other people set up. I always like the state park ones because they're usually far enough away that you don't hear much in the way of traffic, but they're also usually well-lit at a certain point so that you don't have to worry about being too far out in the wilderness. My daughter was in college and only had a day and a half off before she had to get back to her internship, so it was a pleasant trip nonetheless.

We got to the campsite around 6pm and started setting up the tent. Around 9pm we had already cooked some food on the fire, gotten ready for bed, and were sitting down over a firepit watching the fire. We were just shooting the breeze when we heard a rustling in the bushes not too far away, maybe 10 feet or so. I was startled at first because I didn't see anything, but then all of a sudden this small, skinny-looking man with no shirt and no shoes walked out. He was probably 5'8" at the most with black hair that was probably shoulder-length but because it was so unkempt, it hung down past his shoulders. He had a gray shirt tied around his head to keep his hair out of his face and he was wearing a pair of tattered blue jeans with tears in them. He didn't seem to be in great shape, but when he walked down to our campsite, I could tell he was pretty drunk because he kept stumbling and wobbling around.

I didn't want to immediately assume he was homeless (he very well could have been a camp goer nearby who had a few too many), so I tried to be polite. I said "hey there, you okay buddy?" and he just looked at me like a zombie before he started laughing and then fell on his face in the dirt. I don't know how he didn't cut himself up when he did that. My daughter and I got up to help him but he immediately got back up on his feet and started walking towards us. I thought he was going to try to steal something or attack us or something, but all he said was "you got any beer?"

I told him no, but we did have some wine coolers. He stumbled over to the chair next to mine, fell into it, and said "one please." So I handed him one (I have no idea why I didn't tell him no, other than the fact that my daughter was there and it was nighttime, and I think I was just trying to be polite and make sure he didn't get violent. I absolutely never hand out my drinks to random people). He took the bottle from me and immediately started drinking it, nearly choking on the first gulp. As he was drinking, I asked him if he needed any help getting back over to his campsite. I figured at the very least, I could at least walk him in the direction of wherever his site was so that he could find it in the dark more easily. But when I asked him, he just started laughing again and said "I ain't got no campsite."

I was taken aback by that because the guy looked like he hadn't had a shower in weeks. But when he said that, I thought to myself "well, I guess he's just probably got one of those 'vehicle' campsites where you pay to park in one of the lots and you just sleep in your car." I asked him which parking lot his car was in and he just kinda laughed and shook his head and said "no, I ain't got a car." Not sure of what else to say, I tried to get a little more specific with my questions and ask him where he was trying to get to or where he was coming from and stuff, but all he did in response was just kinda mumble and laugh a lot.

Finally I just asked him what his name was in an effort to try to get something out of him that was actually substance. I figured if I could get something as simple as his name, then maybe he'd be willing to tell me where he came from or where he lived or what his situation was. But when I asked him what his name was, he just shook his head and said "nope" and then started laughing again, like that was the funniest thing he'd ever heard. Like I said, this guy was definitely inebriated to the point where he couldn't answer me coherently, so I just decided to roll with it. I asked him if he wanted another wine cooler and he said yes, so I gave him another one, which he immediately started downing. After about five minutes he finished that bottle, then laid down on the pavement and fell asleep.

I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to just leave him out on the cement, but at the same time, carrying him into our tent wasn't exactly the most pleasant thing to do. Maybe it's the dad in me, but the first thing I thought of was making sure my daughter was okay. I asked her if she was comfortable with us leaving him out there and she said yes, so we both went to bed and shut the tent door, thinking that we'd probably see him in the morning.

The next morning, we woke up pretty early and opened the tent to find that he was gone. We figured maybe he'd had a little too much to drink ( yeah right ) and stumbled his way back to his car or something in the middle of the night. The rest of our camping trip that day went without a hitch. It rained a little in the morning, but it cleared up later and we got to take a nice hike.

We got in our car to head home around 3pm and as we were pulling out, I noticed a state park ranger walking around the campsites asking people if they'd seen a guy that fit the description of the guy who had walked into our site the night before. When he got to our car, I rolled down the window and asked him what was up. Apparently, there was a report the night before of a guy walking into a house about five miles down the road from the state park and stealing some alcohol. When the cops got there and looked at the security footage, they saw that the guy who broke in had no shoes or a shirt on. The park ranger said he had been walking up and down the park looking for him but hadn't seen him. I told him that the guy was at our campsite at around 9pm and that we had let him sleep there for the night. The park ranger looked at me in shock and said "you let him *sleep* there?" So I assumed he was dangerous or something and said "you're looking for him because...?" and he just said "yeah, you did not see that guy last night."

I was taken aback and said "yeah, we did. He showed up at about 9pm, stayed for about an hour, and laid down on the cement. We went to bed and when we woke up he was gone." The park ranger just kind of stared at me and said "well, thanks for letting me know." Then he turned around and started walking away. I said "hey, you said you were looking for him because of something. Is he dangerous or something?" And he didn't exactly answer but just said "I don't think he's a bad person, but I don't think he's a person at all." Then he got in his truck and drove off. I was pretty confused about it until we finally got home and I looked up what happened in the news.

Turns out a house *twenty miles away* was burglarized two nights before we got to the campsite. A man, woman, and their 3-year-old daughter lived there, and they all went missing. The cops found the man's car about 15 miles from the house with the woman and daughter inside, both deceased. They had no signs of injury except for the fact that they didn't have any eyes. The man's body was found five miles from the park, with no eyes and a bottle of wine lodged in his anus. I don't know what the hell that guy was that walked into our campsite, but I'm glad he's out of our lives.

EDIT: I just got off the phone with the sheriff and he said that they found the guy. When they brought him in for questioning, he wouldn't talk and kept laughing. But then all of a sudden, he stopped laughing and started talking and acting completely normal. When the sheriff asked him what his name was, he said it was Officer Leo Landers. When they pulled up Officer Landers' info, they found that he had gone missing on patrol in 1945 and they never found a body. He was just considered missing. The sheriff said that they're bringing him in for forensic testing to see if it's really him or not, and if it is, they're going to lock his ass up for a very long time.
