I was a student teacher for the summer at my hometown middle school. Now I am a full-time teacher at the school that starts next week. One of my former students for the summer (5th grade, hence 11 years old) just sent me the cash for a gift from his parents, as he is supposed to start at the school too. It was for $25 and I wasn’t expecting it at all. The gift was a nice bottle of wine, so about $20.

I guess they couldn’t send it before, but he gave me the money for it today because he had to buy his school supplies. He was never in my classes, and I was just in the library where he was sitting and he had the money on the desk. His parents are also very nice people, and I’m very close with them. I’m sure it’s an innocent gesture, but I feel like I should still report it and I think I have to give the principal the money in that case.

Am I overthinking this? I feel like a broken record because my last post was about a student as well.
