Firstly, I believe this is not an argument about women's rights, but rather what constitutes a human life. I feel that the point of contention between pro-lifers and pro-choicers is when a human life is actually formed in the womb, and therefore when it is wrong to end that life.

My personal stance on this is that human life begins at conception. I have a few reasons for this, and I'll do my best to outline them here. Firstly, from the moment of conception, a human life has been formed. This life is determined to develop on its own, and has its own unique DNA. Thus, this life is alive, and it is distinctly human. Now, the next question arises, should this life be protected? I argue yes. I feel that this human life, being weak and powerless, should be protected. It is not the fault of this child that they were conceived, and to punish them for the sins of their parents would be unfair. Thus, I argue that in cases of incest and rape, there are two viable options, adoption and raising of the child. This leads me to my next point, why can't the mother just put the child up for adoption?

In regard to that, there are so many children currently in the foster system that can't find homes. Roughly one third of these children will age out of the foster system without ever having found a home. So, these women should either raise their children or put them up for adoption. The age old argument of "it's my body, I can do what I want with it" is not a valid argument to me. It's not your body that you are harming, it's the body of the child that you are harming. Thus, I believe that abortion should be illegal in all cases but rape, incest, and danger to the mother.

I also believe that if abortion laws are passed, there should be more built up support systems for women who are at risk of abortion. This means more access to free adoption services, financial aid, and access to free or cheap nurseries as well as other systems to help raise a child.

This is my stance on the matter, and I would be glad to hear your arguments against it.

*edit: I have to go to class now, but I'll be back on later in the day to continue the conversation!
