The guy who broke into my house was still in the walls when police showed up.

This is a story I’ve never told anyone, and it’s something that’s happened in the last 6 months. I was in bed alone, which is normal because my husband works 12 hour night shifts at a hospital. I always lock the door before I go to bed (I’m super paranoid and always double check the locks before bed). Before I fall asleep I hear footsteps coming from my living room. Now my house is fairly small so If someone is walking around they’re not that far away from me. So I pull out my phone and call the police and I whisper to them my address and a brief description of what’s happening. I didn’t want to text the police because that would take forever.

The guy is now walking down my hallway towards my room. I don’t want him to see me on the phone so I pull the covers up to my neck and pretend to be asleep. He stands there for what felt like forever looking at me. I was preparing for the worst and my brain was going a million miles an hour. My current plan was to scream at the top of my lungs, and hit him with the nearest thing (which would’ve been a lamp), and then run into my attached bathroom and lock the door until help arrived. Thankfully he didn’t do anything and went back into the hallway towards the opposite side of the house.

There’s a small storage space above my garage. You have to climb a ladder to reach the opening to the space. The opening doesn’t have a door, but it is a small opening. So unless you’re a small person, it’s a tight squeeze. He climbed the ladder (I could hear it wobbling and scratching the wall as his weight shifted onto it) and proceeded to squeeze into the storage space. When he did this I told the 911 operator where the intruder was and she said help was on the way. My house is maybe a 7 minute drive from our local police station. I waited, and I heard police talking outside and my doorbell ring repeatedly. I was afraid to leave my bed and knew they wouldn’t have a key to get in. I didn’t want the guy in my walls to know they were here and end up killing me, so I didn’t call out to them. They ended up kicking the door in and rushing up to my room. They didn’t find the guy until he was crawling out of the hole and they arrested him right away. I found out from the police he had absolutely no criminal record and was in his late 30’s. I have no idea why he did it, but I was told he was probably looking to hide from the cops. Either way, I want him to never be able to do this to another person, so he can go fuck himself.
