If you’re a student in a high school class right now, your teachers are just as angry as you are

I teach high school English, and in my last class today, I’m playing Jeopardy with my students as a review before an exam. My phone is sitting on my desk, and I’m glancing at it whenever I can because I am waiting for my order to be ready for pickup at the restaurant next to my school.

Suddenly, I see a post from one of my former students (who is in college now) come up on my phone. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but the post is from a very bright and kind young woman, and it is not good.

I finish class, dismiss the students, and start reading the comments. Many of my students have seen it (I’m sure some saw it before class), and they are posting on the thread. The ones who haven’t seen it are asking me what is happening.

I tell them that I don’t know, but I’m going to find out, and I’m going to make sure all of you know.

Then I go into my next class, and all I do is describe what happened to my first class, and answer questions about what is happening.

For my last class, I start by giving them the facts I know, and then we begin discussing what is next. I tell my students that I will do everything in my power to make this right. I will fight for them and with them. I am proud to be their teacher.

I love my students, and I will never let them down. Just like I’m sure many of you will tell your students.
