I wish there was an app where you can help people in your area with various tasks (like TaskRabbit or similar) but where people are vetted and you can accept the task knowing that you can feel safe doing it… that’s the idea at least.

It would be the type of app where people could post things like:

“Hey, can you help me get this stuff off the floor? I just had a mental breakdown about clutter but I’m not feeling up to cleaning anything myself”

Or

“I’m really overwhelmed by a task today and need some company with one of the most boring/annoying things I’ve got to do and thought that having someone here to talk to would help get it done”.

Or

“I need someone to help me move a heavy box to the attic. I don’t have a lot of money but I could probably give you some baked goods or something for your time”

Or

“I’m getting really anxious about driving alone in the dark to work tonight because of some recent break-ins in the area. It’s only a ten minute drive. Would someone be willing to drive with me? I’d pay you for your time and gas”

Or

“I’m very lonely and isolated and am having a hard time leaving the house. I really miss having someone to talk to face to face. I can afford to pay you for your time but don’t want to pay a therapist. If someone could just come hang out with me for a few hours, I’d really appreciate it”

These are just some examples of what you might see on the app, but you get the idea - at first glance it’s probably an app for people who need help with small tasks, but really the idea behind the app is actually more about giving an opportunity for people to interact with each other in person and build a sense of community and connection with others who live nearby.

Ideally, you would have to set up an account to use the app, and in that account there would be a lot of information that the app would collect about you for the safety of the people you plan to connect with (and vice versa) - your name, address, phone number, social media information, your place of work, your place of education, names and phone numbers of two people you would be willing to contact in case of an emergency, drivers license number (if applicable), car registration information (if applicable), car insurance information (if applicable), health insurance information, a recent mail or utility bill to verify your place of residence, etc. (the app would only use this info for safety verification purposes so that you can trust that you’re safe if a stranger is coming to your home and vice-versa, and it would never be shared unless you authorized it to be shared or if there was an emergency requiring it).

Ideally, there would also be background checks and mandatory training on the app so that you can be sure you're safe and know how to handle an uncomfortable situation if it arises.

There could also be some kind of system where you could mark on a map where you would be willing to travel to help people. So, if you live in a smaller town that is surrounded by woods that lead to a big city, for example, you could indicate on a map that you would be willing to travel to help people in the big city, but only under certain circumstances or with certain requests.

I’d be surprised if an app like this doesn’t already exist, but I don’t know anyone who uses an app like this and so I thought I’d post this here.

TL;DR: An app where you can request help with small tasks from people in your area and know you will be safe
