Hebrew isn't dead, but it's dying.

Hey guys, I am an Israeli and I'm about to say something you may not want to hear. The truth is, I don't always understand what's going on in the news now. I never understood the Knesset and it's the main reason why I don't vote. Just to make it extra clear - this is what I want for my great nation, not what I want it to be. I hope one day the parties are removed and the nation is ruled by a strong leader, and an advisory board. I may sound like a dictator - but a strong leader who is advised by the wisest minds will always be better than the party system that we have. Whatever political belief I have on the matter isn't important, because it's not what I want, it's the problem with the Knesset that I want to show.

Hebrew, the ancient language of the Jews, has been in use for over 2,500 years, I may be wrong in my estimation of the time frame, but you get the point. It's ancient. Back in the day, the language was so simple - everyone knows the story about Adam and Eve. God would come down and talk to them in the garden, and that's how Adam and Eve talked to each other. The language was used a lot in biblical times, but as the Roman Empire conquered this area and the Jews were exiled, Hebrew wasn't used as much, it was used in some areas, but Latin and Greek were mostly used. With the Roman Empire gone, the Turkish Empire came in, and the language of the land was now Turkish. I may be getting my timelines mixed up here, but that's how I think it was. Once the empire was gone, Arabic started to be used in this land. We all know what happened next, the British conquest, and with it, the English language. In 1948, our nation was re-born, and so was Hebrew. Now we use Hebrew in all our daily lives - work, school, our national news, and our government. That's great, but it also has a problem.

The problem is that everyone in Israel knows English. Just as Arabic was used as an international language in the middle ages, so does English today. Everyone in our nation knows English, and many of us use it. I know English is a great language, and just today I had a conversation with an English speaking person for over 5 hours, I didn't even notice. But that's the problem. When I talked to my friends about something that happened in our parliament, I couldn't explain it to them with great accuracy. I saw a news article, and I couldn't understand the article. Hebrew is dying. Just as it was dying in the time of the second temple, it's dying now. We don't want the second temple to be destroyed now, that's why we have to make sure that Hebrew is being used. Everyone should learn Hebrew and know it well - whether they're Israeli or not. I don't want my language and culture to be forgotten and be limited to the uses of a government I don't even understand. We have to make sure that's not what happens in the future.

I'm a religious man, but I think our future is more important than the bible. The bible is important, but if nothing else, it shows our history. If you want to learn about the past - then it's a great way to do that, and that's great, but if you want to join the future and be a part of it - you have to join us. We use Hebrew every single day, and you can't join us if you don't know it.

We love and respect everyone and their language and culture, and as is stated many times before - if you want to be different and unique, you have to learn our language.
