Google is releasing a new AI chatbot for customers of its cloud-computing service, aiming to capitalise on a software craze that has engulfed Silicon Valley.

The search and advertising company announced the tool, called Gemini, at a conference near its headquarters in San Jose, California. It’s a version of its Bard chatbot that it rolled out to consumers earlier this year, but one that it is touting as more powerful and more customisable for businesses.

Gemini is the latest sign of growing corporate interest in generative AI, which has already been deployed in chatbots at Microsoft Corp and OpenAI, and which is central to Apple Inc’s latest iPhone software.

Gemini will be able to respond in more detail than Bard, and will be able to draw on outside information like a company’s own documents and data sources. It will also be able to remember previous messages, and weave them into a narrative.

Google is launching Gemini with a group of partners including Snowflake, Salesforce and Dropbox.
