My understanding is that he was highly close to the other founding fathers, had a close relationship with George Washington and they even called him an eighteenth century son of liberty. However he was more interested in getting land which led him to make a deal with France to get land for the Americans.
He was pro French and a lot of people were not happy with him because of that.
This was the reason why he went to France because he believed in the cause of liberalism and he was given a lot of power and a lot of land was given to him. He was granted 15,000 acres of land in 1787 at Cherronee, which is a town in northern France.

After nine months in France, Jefferson returned to America, he did not believe that the Americans had the stomach to fight for independence he became vice president to John Adams in 1796. He won the election of 1800 by 25% to 60%. eight years later in 1808 he stepped down and James Madison became president. He passed away on July 4, 1826, and also on that day John Adams passed away. Some people believe that he was not a traitor, but if eight years was his punishment, he should have been punished for the rest of his life.
