Genuinely what the hell is the deal with Rona?

It's been 3 years. Plague after plague have ravaged the world for thousands of years and humanity handled them well. Polio, HIV, Ebola, SARS, etc. Why does the government keep forcing people to wear masks, or get vaxxed for COVID? It's not even a pandemic anymore. Like I know it's still a problem, but it's not a plague. Why do so many places keep forcing people to wear masks, and get vaxxed? Public places, airports, schools, everything. I don't want to think the government are antisocialists, but things like this keep making me think that. Why is it being treated like the Bubonic Plague? The Bubonic plague killed a third of Europe's population, the COVID-19 plague has not even come close to that.
