Professor George Edward Challenger (from "The Lost World") and Sherlock Holmes share some similarities.

Both men are married to a woman called Mrs.———————— (Mrs Challenger and Mrs. Holmes) and each has a bosom friend by the name of a journalist named that has a name starting with a W. ("Watson" and "Wilton")

The two men also share a similar love for exotic adventure, and engage in acrobatics to a degree not common among ordinary men of their day.

Challenger is a younger man than Holmes, and Holmes is much taller than the Professor.

In "The lost world" Professor Challenger is described as having a massive chest, and massive arms, with a large head, and an oversized skull (one can imagine a bit of Conan Doyle's racism as he describes the Professor's face as having

"a forehead which sloped back like that of a gorilla, a skin of a rough-grained, tanned texture, like that of one who till lately had worked in the open heavens"

So yes, a very inhuman figure all in all, a man that would better pass for a gorilla than for a human.

Now imagine that, despite his large frame and massive muscles, he was able to walk on his hands, or stand on two chairs across the room, or do acrobatics and have incredible agility.

That would make him quite the extraordinary chap, almost super-human almost as if he wasn't fully human at all, but a half human half gorilla being with super human abilities.

A being with such a large head and massive muscles would not be unlike a human with the head of a gorilla, which is exactly how Sherlock Holmes is described.

In the story "the hound of the Baskervilles," Sherlock Holmes is described as a creature with the head and body of a man, and the claws of a gorilla.

This is despite him having a normal, human sized skull, and normal human head, and not being described as having any gorilla like features before, or even having a brain larger than normal at all, as it would be the case with a human-gorilla hybrid.

He also does not have any sharp claws, but those of ordinary human hands.

He does however have a very large chest.

And massive arms.

Something that we've heard of before in connection to the Professor.

Holmes being a human-gorilla hybrid, would explain his extraordinary abilities, namely his great intelligence and strength and agility, which are far from those of ordinary men, and more similar to that of an animal.

His animal like nature is often hinted at, at by his closest friend and companion Watson, who says that Sherlock is not like ordinary men and has an animal like way of thinking ("unlike ordinary men who know what they can do and cannot do and have learned to do it, Sherlock does not know what he cannot do, and thus he is able to achieve things that ordinary men are not" he says in one of the stories) and often goes on fours ("when he's thinking, Sherlock likes to go on fours like a dog" Watson says)

There is also a story that suggests that Holmes is very much unlike ordinary men as he is at the same time, in the same place, and in the same time period, as being both a clumsy and useless man, and an agile and superhuman one.

Watson says that Sherlock is extremely physically clumsy, and that he cannot do anything with his hands ("I've never seen Sherlock do anything with his hands, and he certainly cannot do anything that requires dexterity" he says) and that he is utterly useless at anything that requires a hand ("Sherlock is utterly useless with his hands, and he cannot do anything that a normal man would be able to do" he adds) he is even a bad dancer, which Watson says is due to his utter uselessness with his hands ("Sherlock cannot dance, because he is utterly useless with his hands" he says)

And Watson's words seem to match what we see of Holmes in the stories.

He is a bad "swimmer," he cannot even dog paddle or swim, at all.

He cannot "ride" a horse, even though he has spent his entire life around horses.

He has no idea how to "box" and he certainly cannot do anything that requires a hand, like surgery for example.

He cannot do any kind of "craft" and cannot even make his own bed.

In the stories he is, as Watson says, utterly useless, and in all his years, has never been able to do anything with his hands.

At the same time as being utterly useless, however, is an image that Watson has of Sherlock as an agile and superhuman man that is doing acrobatics, and is able to do everything he cannot do.

Watson goes on and on about his "agility" and his "ease in movement" and how he can do things that ordinary men cannot do.

Like standing on one leg ("Sherlock is able to stand on one leg for hours, something that ordinary men cannot do" he says) or "swinging" on a pair of curtains across a room ("Sherlock is able to swing on a pair of curtains, in a way that ordinary men cannot" he says) or standing on two chairs, or standing on the back of two chairs, or doing acrobatics while standing on a stack of books, etc., etc.

Watson goes on and on about how physically superhuman he is, while at the same time also being extremely physically useless.

There is a story that says that Sherlock is able to jump extremely high, much higher than an ordinary man, as Watson says ("Sherlock is able to jump much higher than ordinary men can" he says) something that would be expected of a half human half gorilla hybrid, but utterly impossible for ordinary men.

It would be unheard of for an ordinary man, to be both extremely physically useless, and extremely physically gifted, at the same time, something that would be impossible for ordinary men to achieve, and expected only of a creature that is half human and half gorilla.

Watson also says that Sherlock is extremely strong, much stronger than an ordinary man.

And that he has incredible endurance, and he is able to starve for days and go on for hours without sleep and endure incredible hardships and pain ("Sherlock has an endurance far superior to ordinary men, and he has an incredible threshold for pain" he says)

Sherlock is also extremely agile and quick ("Sherlock is able to dodge attacks with ease and he is quicker in his movements than ordinary men" Watson says) and he has superhuman eyesight, a feature that he shares with the Professor.

He is said to be able to see incredibly far away distances with his bare eyes, far greater than ordinary men and see details that would escape others.

Is Sherlock Holmes the same man as Professor Challenger?

They both have massive arms and a large chest.

They both have a "friend" named Watson (or Wilton) that is a journalist.

They both have a wife named Mrs. —————— (Mrs Holmes and Mrs. Challenger)

They both have incredible endurance, agility and strength and incredible eyesight.

They are also both described in their first appearance as having gorilla like features.

Holmes has gorilla like hands, and Challenger has a gorilla like head and face.

Is Sherlock Holmes a half human half gorilla being?

Is he Professor Challenger's father?
